Helpful Information

What is an oxygen sensor in a car?

Mopar oxygen sensors (or O2 sensors) monitor the unburnt oxygen levels in the exhaust gasses that exit your engine. This lets your car measure its fuel mixture. A vehicle’s oxygen sensor tells the main computer whether the engine is producing a rich or lean fuel mixture and lets it adjust to the optimal air-fuel ratio.

How many oxygen sensors does a car have?

The amount of oxygen sensors in a car depends on how many exhaust pipes it has. Cars sold in the United States have pipes with a catalytic converter that contains two oxygen sensors. Vehicles that use a single exhaust system will often have two sensors. Double exhaust systems, on the other hand, come with four oxygen sensors.

Can you clean an oxygen sensor?

Unfortunately, cleaning the oxygen sensor of your car will void its warranty and lead to more potential problems. This is why your only option is to replace it if it starts to become faulty. Remember to check its wires first and test the sensor with a digital voltmeter and back probe after your car reaches 600°F.

What causes an oxygen sensor to fail?

Mopar oxygen sensors eventually wear out around 60,000 and 90,000 miles. These components will slowly become unresponsive and stop working over time. A faulty sensor can also be caused by contamination, extreme temperatures, poor maintenance, and a leaky gasket.

How much does an oxygen sensor cost?

If you’re changing sensors at the mechanic, top-grade sensors and other necessary components will cost you $155 to $380. This price can also go up depending on how many sensors you’re going to replace. Even if you plan to change them out yourself, it will cost you around the same amount.
