Helpful Information

What do spark plugs do?

Your vehicle’s spark plugs supply the initial energy needed to start your engine. It burns the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber, starting the engine and powering your ride. Whenever they light up, spark plugs move heat away from the combustion chamber and direct it to a water jacket in the cylinder head.

Do diesel engines have spark plugs?

Diesel engines work without spark plugs. Instead, they use a compression ignition and glow plugs. Glow plugs help cold engines burn fuel by heating the combustion chamber. Additionally, diesel fuel doesn’t burn, which is why diesel engines don’t need to light their fuel to start the engine.

How long do spark plugs last?

Auto spark plugs have varying lifespans, depending on their design and material. Copper plugs can last between 10,000 and 20,000 miles. Meanwhile, silver spark plugs can work up to 20,000 miles. Iridium and platinum plugs can last 60,000 miles, with some even lasting up to 100,000 miles without needing a replacement.

What does a bad spark plug look like?

Check if your spark plug has any deposits on it. See if it has black, thick carbon on the gap between its sparking end and the hook-shaped metal piece over it. Also, check for dark carbon or oily residue on the ends. This residue is common in two-stroke gasoline engines.

How much do spark plugs cost?

Spark plugs are affordable components since you can get them for $10. If you want better and more long-lasting spark plugs, those come at a premium. Spark plug sets can range anywhere between $16 and $100. You’ll also need to determine how many cylinders your engine has so you know how many plugs you need.
